An Alaskan Family of Jewelers for almost 60 Years

My wife Michele and I are the owners and operators of the Alaska Mint. I was 4 years old when my parents moved our family to Alaska from Colorado. They were young and ambitious, my Dad worked as a “roughneck” on oil platforms until they had saved up enough money to start a small jewelry shop. In 1967, Robuck & Sons, our families first jewelry business was born. Since then our family has had several stores around Alaska. In 1990 after testing with a sidewalk vendors cart for a few summers, I opened a location in downtown Anchorage where we could manufacture and sell souvenir coins, natural gold nuggets, and other gifts.

Originally, we produced the art work and had our medallions manufactured outside of Alaska. Then we started acquiring and assembling the equipment to mint silver and gold medallions right here in Anchorage. We started out with 1 coin design. We now have thousands of dies. All of our medallions are struck in our location on 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage. Our medallions are detailed reproductions of original sculptures. Many have a limited mintage and are highly collectible.

“Heart of Alaska” Gold Nugget Pendant

This rugged “Heart of Alaska” gold nugget pendant is made with a heavy 18k custom cage frame. We wanted to make something that looks like it was made for the crusty gold miner that found a special nugget like this back in the day!  It is perfect for a man or woman to wear. The pendant is about 1 1/4″ wide, just over 1 1/2″ tall including the bail, and just under 1/2″ at its thickest. The nugget weighs 37.1 grams and the total weight of the pendant is 49.9 grams. This pendant comes with a display chain at no charge. Since it weighs over 1.50 ounces you will want to wear it on a substantial chain. We have several to choose from, give us a call at 1-907-278-8414 for some chain ideas.

The pendant comes in a nice box. It shows up ready to give to someone special, even if that special someone is you.

Gold Nugget Information:

Formation of Gold Nuggets: Geological processes deep within the Earth’s crust form gold nuggets. Miners typically find gold nuggets in quartz veins or other mineral deposits. Over time, weathering and erosion can break these deposits apart, releasing gold particles and nuggets into rivers and streams. Each piece is one of a kind with no two being exactly alike.

Where to Find Gold Nuggets: Regions with a history of gold mining, such as Alaska, California, Canada, and Australia, can produce gold nuggets. Wherever the effects of erosion took place. That would include rivers, streams, ancient dried up river channels and underground riverbeds. They call this type of gold placer gold.

Equipment and Tools: From gold pans and suction dredges that act like an underwater vacuum cleaner, to heavy equipment loading dirt and gravel into large trommels and sluice boxes, people search for gold. Additionally, metal detectors are particularly useful for locating gold nuggets hidden underground.

Identifying Gold Nuggets: Gold nuggets vary in size, shape, and purity. They can be small flakes or large, irregularly shaped pieces. Natural gold is bright yellow and heavy, so gold nuggets are usually much heavier than other similarly sized rocks. They may also have quartz or other minerals attached, as gold often forms in association with other minerals. In fact, natural Alaskan gold is typically 75% to 95% pure, or 18k to 22k.

We have one of the largest selections of gold nugget pendants in the world. Look through our collection today and find one that speaks to you!

We buy raw gold from placer miners and gold bearing quartz that is mined deep underground. From these natural elements, we fashion beautiful, one-of-a-kind jewelry that is a valuable addition to any collection. While the pieces are rare, they are surprisingly affordable. The items available in our store are either made in our shop, or by one of our longtime jewelers. We are proud of our company history and look forward to share the Alaskan experience through the Alaska Mint.
